BEAN'S GALLIPOLI
Author: Kevin Fewster On the morning of 25th April 1915 the imperial troops consisting of British, Indian, Australian and New Zealand troops (ANZAC) attacked the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, The idea of starting a new front was to draw the Turkish troops away from joining Germany at the main front in Europe. It was hoped that the attack would establish a force which would eventually engage the Germans on two fronts. It never happened and the imperial army bogged down to trench warfare within 1500 metres off the beach. The Turks were a strong force, with well trained officers
backed by German advisors. The Australian Government, familiar with the one sided dealing met out by the British high command insisted that we have our own “on the spot” correspondent. Charles Bean won that position over tough competition, Keith Murdoch, future owner of the Herald Sun newspaper being one contender. CW Bean was given total access to the front, and moved at his own peril through the trenches to all parts of the front. He was present for forty attacks and suffered a bullet wound in the leg in August 1915. The bullet remained with Charles until his death. The book is the edited version of Beans personal diary’s which he kept during the campaign. The introduction, written by Bean himself has photos showing some three hundred diaries and books written during the campaign. Bean used the diaries to write “The Official History of Australia” on the war 1914 – 1918, available on line www.awm.gov.au. In a sense Bean was ahead of his time, he was what the Americans now term as an embedded reporter. The difference being that Bean had, to deal with censors, telegraph and infrequent mail. Kevin Fewster has made an excellent job of editing and compiling CW Beans diaries, it is especially good for readers interested in history or war historians.
